Fall Fashion

By Rachel Eisenhart

It’s official...fall has begun. Along with back-to-school, pumpkin spice, and Halloween, the change in season also provides something else for us to enjoy: fall fashion. Here are some of the hottest trends according to the fall 2019 runway:

Knits

Knits are always in during the fall. They can be dressed up with a skirt and jewelry or dressed down with jeans depending on the occasion— plus, they always keep you warm. A chic knit sweater is ideal for a walk in the park with friends, as well as for a nice holiday dinner. Designers like Christopher Kane and Zara are showing some of this year’s top knit looks. Christopher Kane took this past summer’s neon trend and brought it to fall through knits while Zara went with a more ready-to-wear look. According to Susan Berman, fashion expert and owner of accessory company Franchi, “knit is seasonally appropriate and can use various materials to change the look.”

Houndstooth

Houndstooth has been in fashion for a long time. A houndstooth skirt with a white top can be worn on any occasion. The pattern was originally popularized in the late ‘40s by Christian Dior, based on the pattern “shepherd's check.” It’s being brought back thanks to the likes of Chanel, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana. Chanel used some of their signature embellishments, along with a classic jumpsuit, to complement the houndstooth coat. Dolce & Gabbana took this pattern to another level with a full suit made from the pattern. “Although it’s a menswear-inspired pattern, in certain styles, it can take on more of a feminine air,” Berman adds.

Shearling

Shearling coats and shoes may be chic and cozy but are often undesirable on ethical grounds. Luckily, many companies make synthetic coats that look and feel the same but are eco-friendly. This style dates back to the 1960s when jackets were made from shearling, and it was popularized by European Air Forces. The look is making a comeback thanks to designers Miu Miu and Chloe. Miu Miu has made a cape-like coat as their take on the trend, and Chloe chose a more classic look. According to Berman, “it is warm, natural, and can enhance an outfit”.

Asymmetrical Necklines

Asymmetrical necklines, which are rooted in the ‘80s, are back. When paired with the right jeans, this look is perfect for anything from school to hanging out with friends on days off. The look is being brought back by Carolina Herrera, Kate Spade, and many other designers. Kate Spade chose a more subtle difference with just the collar being asymmetric, whereas Carolina Herrera was more dramatic with this look. “It’s the resurgence of a trend that can serve as an alternative to traditional looks,” says Berman.
